In 1985, the first fish, a goldfish (Carassius auratus), was genetically modified by Z. Zhu and his colleagues in the People's Republic of China to grow and mature at an increased rate. They were hoping to apply the same technology to farmed fish (Zhu et al., 1985). Since this study, many scientists have altered the genetic make up of fish to increase growth rates, food conversion efficiency, and bacterial resistance. Several species of fish have been genetically modified mainly for uses in aquaculture for human consumption, pharmaceutical production, or for biological control of aquatic nuisance species (ISEES, 2003).

The Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar ) was the first genetically modified fish species. It was patented on July 17, 2001 to the company Seabright (now known as ‘Genesis'). The patent was granted by the European Patent Office (Greenpeace, 2001).
