What is required for successful distributed learning networks?

People (faculty willing to learn while teaching; faculty willing to teach other faculty)

Communication (listserv, web site, face-to-face meetings)

Worthwhile Project (inherent interest, flexible scheduling, time commitment by faculty)

Equipment (lab equipment, software, computers with PC/Mac/Linux options)

Technical Training (faculty experience, protocols)

Ongoing Support (listserv, workshops, meetings, papers, funding)

Assessment (define goals, imagine success, measure reality)

 

Dr. Sarah Elgin (Washington University in St. Louis and HHMI Professor) is working with me to develop a distributed genome sequencing consortium based at WU. She has run a course for two years and is developing dry lab activities first with wet lab components to follow.
