Davidson College will build a science diversity program (Strategies for Success) by using approaches similar to those used in successful programs at other institutions.

The Strategies for Success year-long mentoring program will focus on effective study habits and skill sets used in science courses. The faculty mentor for the program, Dr. Verna Case, will have regular individual contact with Strategies for Success students through their first year of introductory science courses. In addition, the entire group of students and Dr. Case will meet once each month for dinner, followed by an informal discussion of common concerns. Dr. Jerry Putnam, the premedical advisor, will provide assistance for those Strategies for Success students who are interested in pursuing a medical career.

The program will identify and provide paid tutors for students who may need additional help in their introductory science courses.

Strategies for Success students will be identified with the aid of Davidson’s Office of Admission. First year students may also “self identify” or be recommended by an advisor or professor. The program will be widely advertised through brochures distributed by the College Admission office.
