Many viruses have a spike protein that has similar function and location within the viral membrane when compared to the SARS-associated coronavirus (SARS-CoV). However, the SARS-CoV Spike (S) protein has noted low amino acid homology with other viral spike proteins (Rota et al., 2003).(See Structure and Function)
