Glossary of Terms:

Aquaculture: the cultivation of the natural produce of water (as fish or shellfish)(Marriam-Webster, 2004).

Cassette: a section of a gene.

Gene: basic unit of biological information; specific segment of DNA in a discrete region of a chromosome that serves as a unit of function by encoding for a particular RNA protein (Hartwell, L.H. et al., 2004).

Genome: the sum of the total genetic information in a particular cell of organism (Hartwell, L.H. et al., 2004).

Plasmids: small circles of double-stranded DNA that can replicate in bacterial cells independently of the bacterial chromosome (Hartwell, L.H. et al., 2004).

Promoters: DNA sequence near the beginning of genes that signal RNA polymerase where to begin transcription (Hartwell, L.H. et al., 2004).
