Strongylocentrotus
purpuratus Genes in Development: High mobility group protein genes
SpHMG1
Function
SpHMG1 gene encodes a member of the HMG1 family of proteins. HMG1 proteins are abundant non-histone chromosomal proteins
of eucaryotic cells.
SpHMG1 may have a function in transcriptional regulation of CyIIIb gene (Niemeyer, C. C. et al., 1995).
Protein
The SpHMG1 is a 2.6 kDa protein containing the HMG1 box
as well as the characteristic
spacing of certain aa found in the HMG1 family of proteins, [W]-10-[Y,F]-10-[Y}-6-[Y] (Landsman and Bustin, 1993).
S. purpuratus HMG1 contain a basic
internal repeat and its C terminus consists of a negatively
charged 20-aa stretch of six Asp and 14 Ser, which if phosphorilated
will add to the overall negative charge of the C-terminus (Niemeyer, C. C. et al., 1995).
